I, Coriander

Written by Sally Gardner and winner of Children’s Book of the Year 2005, ‘I, Coriander’ tells the story of a young girl who travels between 1600s London and a parallel fairy kingdom. For my costume, I designed and created young fairy Princess Unwin’s wedding gown. She does not want to be wed, but by doing so will become fairy Queen.

I created my own drawings, paintings and monoprinting to create illustrations resembling the Thames riverbanks and the 1600s London landscape. I took a great deal of inspiration from St Paul's Cathedral which resides on the Thames, as well as the old boats passing through. Once the prints had been created, I scanned and developed them in Adobe Photoshop, and eventually sublimation printed them onto dull duchess satin. Afterwards , I embellished with beads and foil. This became the skirt of the costume.

I developed eleven characters for this theatre adaptation, some of their costume technical drawings follow...
